The Golden Jubilee Research Institute has approximately 100 research projects in either the actively recruiting or follow-up stages.
Around half of these are drug studies (Controlled Trials of Investigational Medicinal Products – CTIMPs), or device studies. These research projects represent the more complex end of research within an NHS environment. Although the portfolio changes from month to month – as research projects are approved, added, completed and removed - the following table provides a snapshot of the range of studies as of June 2017.
Project type – categories are used by the NHS Research Ethics Service. |

Approximately 40% of our research portfolio is sponsored and funded by commercial companies, normally either drug or device companies.
The remaining projects are sponsored by the NHS or other non-commercial organisations, are normally linked to an academic partner organisation/university and are funded by non-commercial organisations such as the British Heart Foundation or the Chief Scientist Office. This includes research projects that are sponsored by the Golden Jubilee – currently 15% of the portfolio. The protocol for these research projects will have been designed by Golden Jubilee staff, occasionally in collaboration with an academic organisation but sometimes independent of an external organisation.
Ongoing Research Projects
Of the research projects undertaken at the Golden Jubilee Research Institute, there are five main areas covered – Advanced Heart Failure, Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit, Interventional Cardiology, Orthopaedics, Surgery and Anaesthetics.
