NHS Golden Jubilee Interventional Cardiologist Professor Hany Eteiba has made history as the first international medical graduate to be elected President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, a 425 year-old institution.

This extraordinary achievement was celebrated as Professor Eteiba officially began his 3-year term at the College’s Annual General Meeting on Friday 6 December 2024.

Professor Eteiba is renowned globally for his pivotal role in developing interventional cardiology services in the West of Scotland, as well as his significant contributions to the research and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Professor Eteiba said: “When I came to Glasgow 40 years ago to train under some of the world’s best cardiologists, I could never have imagined being considered, let alone elected, as President of this prestigious institution.

“It’s a great honour and privilege, not just for me but also for the Golden Jubilee and the wider healthcare community in Scotland.

“This appointment is an opportunity to give back by continuing the College’s tradition of excellence in education and training, ensuring that patients receive the best possible care, and supporting the next generation of healthcare professionals.”

Originally from Cairo, Professor Eteiba graduated in medicine from Al-Azhar University before moving to Glasgow to pursue advanced training in cardiology.

His career in Scotland has been marked by leadership and innovation. After becoming a consultant in 1996, he was instrumental in establishing and advancing interventional cardiology services in the region.

Professor Eteiba has overseen the development of the hospital’s heart and lung services, one of the UK’s largest and most advanced facilities for cardiac care.

He has also championed research partnerships with universities, ensuring that the hospital remains at the forefront of practice-changing cardiovascular research and inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Professor Eteiba added: “As President, I want to open the doors of the College to young people, particularly students, to show them the immense joy and fulfilment that comes from working in healthcare.

“There is so much to be proud of in the NHS and we must do more to attract and nurture future talent.”

Looking ahead, Professor Eteiba aims to continue strengthening Scotland’s position as a leader in cardiovascular care, research, and training while ensuring that all healthcare professionals feel supported in delivering compassionate, high-quality patient-focused care.

NHS Golden Jubilee Medical Director, Mark MacGregor, said: “Professor Eteiba’s contributions to cardiovascular medicine in Scotland and beyond have been transformative.

“His historic election as President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is a testament to his dedication, expertise and leadership.

“On behalf of the entire NHS Golden Jubilee family, we extend our heartfelt congratulations and support as he embarks on this new chapter.”

Professor Eteiba has served the College for more than 20 years, most recently as its International Director, and previously as Vice-President (Medical). He is an Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow’s Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences and is a past president of the Scottish Cardiac Society.
