A family whose son passed away in the Golden Jubilee National Hospital has raised another £450 for the ward he was treated in.

The Campbell family from Greenock have now raised more than £10,000 for the National Hospital since Alexander died four years ago.

Alexander was just 19 when he passed away on 20 April 2014 – eight days after the road accident in Port Glasgow.

He was originally taken to Inverclyde Royal before being transferred to the Clydebank facility where his mum and dad spent a constant vigil at his bedside.

Parents Shaun and Helen were back at the Golden Jubilee on the four-year anniversary to hand over the cheque, which was raised by family and friends.

Shaun, 47, said: “Every year we’ve had a football match to raise money. Alexander’s brother Dylan organises a team of young players and I do the same for older players. The old team won 6-4 this time to make it 2-2 in matches won.

“Alexander was football-daft, he loved Celtic and Chelsea, and all his friends come together for the game. I can’t thank everyone enough for their love and support to our family and we wanted to raise money for the ICU ward at the Golden Jubilee to thank them all for their amazing care and support.”

The family also thanked Provost of Inverclyde Martin Brennan for his support in providing free football facilites for the matches to take place.

Shaun and Helen handed the cheque over to Charge Nurse Mary Murray, who helped care for Alexander, and Clinical Nurse Manager Craig Kingstree, at the bench dedicated to Alexander on hospital grounds.

Mary said: “I remember Alexander so well; it’s so generous of the family to donate money for us and it will certainly be used for improvements to ensure we can help other families here in the future.”

Anne Marie Cavanagh, Nurse Director at the Golden Jubilee, said: “On behalf of everyone at the Golden Jubilee Hospital, I would like to offer our deepest gratitude to the Campbell family for their continued support. Donations like these will ensure we can continue to make a real difference to the lives of other patients and families.”
