NHS Golden Jubilee’s Pharmacy team has been shortlisted in this weekend’s 2025 Scottish Pharmacist Awards.

The dedicated department is up for the Hospital Team of the Year in the national awards, which take place in the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) on Saturday (26 April).

The team based in the Golden Jubilee University National Hospital has been shortlisted for showing outstanding dedication and commitment to the Pharmacy profession through improvements in healthcare and clinical innovation for patients from across Scotland.

The service helps care for patients across a range of elective (planned) services including ophthalmology and orthopaedic, as well as emergency heart, lung and diagnostics care to meet the diverse needs of Scotland’s population, including Scotland’s only heart transplant centre.

Following expansion with a new Surgical Centre at the national hospital over the past year, the Pharmacy team set out a new vision and strategy, which included:

  • staffing and service provision
  • pharmacy hubs in each of the clinical areas to support patient care better
  • improved efficiency for discharge processes
  • reducing duplication and variation of work
  • implementing cost-effective and sustainable workflows

NHS Golden Jubilee Director of Pharmacy, Laura Fulton, said: “I am immensely proud of the team and the work we have achieved, especially over the past year.

“The impact of the changes we have introduced has been impressive - patients are getting home quicker, more nurses’ time is being freed up to care for patients and, most importantly from our perspective, patients are having meaningful interactions with the highly trained pharmacy floor teams.

“The whole team has responded positively to the many changes in a short space of time. The new and improved structure has seen the teams embedded in all services, with positive multidisciplinary working on display and our patients are benefiting.”

NHS Golden Jubilee has expanded considerably over the past 5 years, introducing new services and increasing existing ones to deliver the capacity to meet the country’s growing healthcare needs.

Other major innovations within the Pharmacy department include the addition of Scotland’s first Consultant Pharmacist for Cardiology - accredited by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, leading in the introduction of a new pharmacy stock control system, as well as implementing HEPMA (Hospital Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration) to enhance current processes and improve patient safety.

NHS Golden Jubilee Medical Director, Mark MacGregor, said: “NHS Golden Jubilee is the national leader in reducing patient waiting times for planned care and specialist services, and innovative teams like Pharmacy help us deliver top quality person-centred care for all of our patients.

“We are extremely proud of everyone in our Pharmacy team for all of their hard work and dedication resulting in this deserved recognition, and we would like to wish them, and all the other worthy finalists, the best of luck on the night.”
