Barbara's Everest trek for The Beatson
For many, trekking to Everest Base Camp is a once-in-a-lifetime challenge — but for Barbara Casey, CSPD Manager at NHS Golden Jubilee, it’s also an opportunity to raise vital funds for The Beatson Cancer Charity while pushing herself to new limits.
Barbara, an avid adventurer, has self-funded the trek, using it as a chance to support cancer care while fulfilling a personal ambition. She hopes to raise at least £1,000 for The Beatson, a cause close to many hearts.
Training for the Challenge
Preparing for the trek is no small feat. To build strength and endurance, Barbara has changed her diet, focusing on high-protein meals and structured eating times. She’s also taking her training to new heights, literally, by completing a Munro every weekend in the lead-up to her departure. In addition, she recently tackled the Laugavegur Trail in Iceland, sleeping in huts to prepare for the conditions she’ll experience in Nepal.
Barbara won’t be making the journey alone. She will be joined by her friend from New Zealand and her friend’s brother, making this an international adventure of determination and camaraderie.
The Journey to Everest Base Camp
Once in Nepal, Barbara will spend 4 days acclimatising before taking on a 1-day climb to further adjust to the altitude. From there, she’ll begin the gruelling trek to Everest Base Camp (EBC), reaching an altitude of 17,598 feet (5,364m) above sea level.
To make fundraising even more engaging, Barbara is running a step-count challenge, inviting supporters to guess how many steps it will take her to reach EBC from Lukla (9,383 feet / 2,860m). Prizes will be awarded to the closest guesses.
