As Scotland’s fagship hospital for elective and specialist care, we are home to Scotland’s largest ophthalmology centre, one of Europe’s biggest elective orthopaedic centres and a major diagnostic imaging service.

NHS Golden Jubilee also manages all heart and lung surgery for the west of Scotland, as well as 3 national heart and lung services, including the country’s only adult heart transplantation unit.

Our Highlights

  • Performed more than 81,500 procedures in 2022/23:
    • 75,000 elective procedures in orthopaedics, cataracts, general surgery, colorectal, scopes and scans.
    • 9,000 cardiology, cardiac and thoracic procedures.
  • Carried out a record 40 adult heart transplants - the highest in the UK - in 2022/23.
  • Continue to provide life-saving Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedures for patients who cannot have open heart surgery.
  • Carried out 30% of all cataract and orthopaedic procedures in NHS Scotland in 2022/23.
  • Managed the rollout of the Scottish National Radiology Reporting Service,
  • with over 148,700 procedures reported to date and a saving of £1.5 million for
  • the NHS.
  • Lung surgery team routinely meet the 31-day cancer target for patients. First NHS hospital in Scotland to be accredited by the Royal College of Physicians’ Joint Advisory Group (JAG) on Gastrointestinal (GI) Endoscopy - a measure of excellence used to underpin all aspects of a high-quality endoscopy service.
  • Expanded our support for Endoscopy services by 24%, bringing forward activity before the opening of our Phase 2 Expansion and delivering 7,000 procedures this year, with 9,000 planned for next.
  • Phase 2 of our Expansion due to open in 2024, to support waiting times across NHS Scotland.

Innovation and Research

  • The frst Hospital in Scotland to use a Da Vinci robot to carry out lung surgery, currently approximately 900 undertaken.
  • Performed more than 2,000 robotic orthopaedic joint replacement procedures.
  • Performed the frst Meniscal Transplant in Scotland, potentially beneftting thousands of younger patients every year.
  • First Scottish site to carry out a Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Replacement - replacing a patient’s heart valve through a vein in his leg, avoiding the need for open-heart surgery. 
  • First in the world to treat a patient with an Implantable Cardioverter Defbrillator using an MRI scanner.
  • Pioneered enhanced recovery for hip and knee replacements, getting patients up and on their feet on the day of surgery, now accepted as the gold standard across NHS Scotland.
  • Led on the pioneering COVID-RV study, becoming the frst in the world to confrm that COVID-19 is associated with impaired function of the right side of the heart, changing the landscape for future pandemics and potentially fatal heart and lung issues generally.
  • A proven track record in international research studies, including CUPID2, SERCA2a, PRAMI and T-Time.
  • First Scottish NHS Board to perform Endoscopic Vein Harvesting (EVH), a much less invasive procedure for taking a vein from your leg to use as part of a coronary artery bypass graft to limit damage and improve recovery times.
