Four 10K’s in four months for Golden Jubilee employee
The Golden Jubilee National Hospital are supporting a member of staff who is set to run four 10 kilometre races in just four months to raise money for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.
Carolyn Porter, the Orthopaedic Booking Office Team Leader at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, decided to undertake this challenge after learning that her close friend, Jeannie Millan, had been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and was going to require four rounds of chemotherapy.
Carolyn said: “I’ve just started training for these events. I decided I was going to do one when I first found out Jeannie had been diagnosed. When I discovered she was going to have four rounds of chemotherapy, I looked into it and realised there were four races taking place back to back and decided to do all four – one for each round of chemotherapy.
“Raising awareness for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research is very important to me. I lost another friend of mine to this illness three years ago, so I just want to do everything possible to help spread awareness.”
Jeannie is a mother of three teenagers, and is no stranger to adversity having raised two children with disabilities. Her youngest was diagnosed with Prader Willi Syndrome, a rare genetic condition affecting no more than one in 15,000 children in theUK, while her oldest suffers from Autism.
Carolyn continued: “Jeannie has been 100% positive about the entire thing; just taking one day at a time. It’s only been 12 weeks since she was diagnosed, and she just wants to raise awareness; this can strike any one of us at any time. However, there is a little bit of good news that has come out of this, as she has just got engaged to her partner, Billy Brand.”
Starting with the Great Scottish Run on Sunday 6 October, Carolyn will be participating in 10Ks across the country in November, December and January. However, she won’t be alone, as she has been joined by Lynsey Dickie, another friend of Jeannie and a survivor of cervical cancer.
Carolyn has set up a Just Giving page to receive donations for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. If you would like to sponsor Carolyn, head over to www.JustGiving.com/Carolyn-Porter1.
