Chair blog: Top 100 for equality

What a great start to 2015 with the fantastic news that for the first time, we have been named in the top 100 UK employers in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index (WEI).

The WEI measures how well an organisation meets the needs of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual (LGB) staff members, and is widely accepted as a good indicator against equality targets generally.

Climbing 53 places since last year, the Golden Jubilee is now ranked 70th in the UK as a whole and is in the top five in Scotland. It is also the fifth year in a row that we have been named the top NHSScotland health board in the Index.

We were also delighted to learn that our Head of Strategy and Performance, Carole Anderson, was named one of the top 50 LGBT executives in the UK. Out of thousands of nominees, Carole was ranked 42nd, for her dedication to improving awareness of LGBT issues within the organisation as one of our equality leads, and striving to create an inclusive and diverse workforce.

Over the past 12 months we have taken some amazing steps to improving awareness and support for all of our staff. Last summer, both I and our Chief Executive, Jill Young, became the first NHS Board Chair and Chief Executives to take the NoBystanders Pledge, dedicated to wiping out bullying and intolerance in the workplace.

Our work on equality, diversity and inclusion is an important part of how we demonstrate our organisational values, especially of valuing dignity and respect. We have worked hard to make these values even more visible and appreciate how they influence how we behave each and every day. This helps us provide a caring, personal and quality service for our patients, visitors and guests.

As we move forward in 2015, we will continue to invest in new and innovative ways to make sure that all of our staff are getting the opportunities and have the facilities, resources and support they need to get the most out of their role at the Golden Jubilee.

We firmly believe that we provide the highest possible standard of care and service for every patient, visitor, delegate and guest who comes here. This can only happen because we are committed to creating an inclusive work environment that not only welcomes individuals of all backgrounds, but actively highlights and celebrates our unique mix of people.
