Time to celebrate and donate

This month marks the 65th anniversary of the NHS in Scotland. But for the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, it is also a time for us to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our orthopaedic service and the fifth anniversary of our heart and lung service.

Ten years of quality orthopaedic services

The Golden Jubilee National Hospital’s pioneering orthopaedic programme was established in 2003 and in that year, approximately 350 procedures were performed for NHSScotland.

Ten years on, a team of 11 surgeons carry out approximately 3,000 procedures per year, including 15% of all hip and knee replacements in Scotland and just under half of those in the west of Scotland. This year, we were pleased to meet the demand to perform an additional 300 hip and knee replacements a year to help meet the needs of patients across Scotland.

Over those ten years our team has carried out more than  22,000 orthopaedic procedures – mostly hip and knee replacements and an increasing number of complex cases– in what is now recognised as Scotland’s biggest elective arthroplasty centre.

Whilst the service has grown substantially since 2003, the vision is still the same: delivering high quality of care for all patients and working together with our orthopaedic colleagues and the orthopaedic departments across Scotland.

As a national resource for NHSScotland, we are proud that we have been able to meet the specific demand for orthopaedic surgery within NHSScotland for the last ten years.

With the growing number of older people in our society, our orthopaedic services will continue to be in high demand and we are delighted that more patients will benefit from our specialist team in the years ahead.

Patients benefit from five years of lung services

When it opened in 2008, our heart and lung service instantly became one of the biggest centres of its kind in the UK.

Our world class lung centre is now recognised, by the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland, as the busiest in the UK. In the first five years we have treated more patients than ever before; over 7,000 lung surgeries have been carried out and resection rates for lung cancer have increased from 10% to 15%, improving the survival rates for a large number of patients.

And by introducing minimally invasive keyhole surgeries, such as Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS), the patient experience and outcomes have also been improved, with hospital stays reduced from between six and seven days to just three or four.

Living with a new heart – five years on

We were delighted when a very special patient dropped by to help us celebrate our fifth anniversary – the first patient to undergo a heart transplant at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital on 21 July 2008.

Georgina Burt is so thankful for her second chance at life that she returns every year with a plaque and a cake for the staff who saved her life. But this year was an extra special occasion as they were marking the fifth anniversary of both her transplant and the service.

You just need to look at Georgina to see the difference organ donation can make to individuals and their families. There has been tremendous progress in the last five years with the increase in the number of transplants and we continue to work with colleagues across theUKto increase donor rates so that we can celebrate more milestones with people like Georgina.

To be part of the organ donation programme is to be part of something very special.  And it is something we can all do, so read more about about Georgina’s story on our website:

And if you haven’t signed up as a organ donor, think about it again and check out the Organ Donation Scotland website to see how you too can be part of something very special:
