Four in a row for workplace equality

With a new year now well under way, we are all busy preparing for another significant year in Scotland and the Golden Jubilee National Hospital.

We were delighted to celebrate 2014 with news that the Golden Jubilee National Hospital (GJNH) has been ranked the top Scottish NHS Board in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index (WEI) for the fourth year running. We also moved up the rankings from 159th last year to 123rd this year – across all types of public and private sector organisations throughout the UK and in a field with becomes tougher and more competitive each year.

The WEI is a measure of how an organisation meets the needs of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual (LGB) staff and service users and is a good indicator for equality progress generally. This national benchmarking tool also gives us an opportunity to measure our own progress against other public and private companies and institutions within the UK.

Over the past year, we have made progress in a number of areas.

  • We have developed a good practice leaflet, “Getting it right for our LGBT patients”, providing staff with information on terminology, communication, confidentiality and highlights the care requirements of Transgender patients.

  • We have put processes in place to ensure Equalities are an important element of meetings with key suppliers and stakeholders.

  • We have expanded our social media plan to ensure improved and effective community engagement on the subject of equality.

  • We have launched a DVD demonstrating the extensive work on our Equalities and Board Values, which is available to staff at out Induction programme and to the public via our You Tube channel.

  • We have also made a concentrated effort to explicitly state that all work-life balance policies – from parental leave to special leave – are applicable to LGB&T staff members, with easy to read staff guides being produced.

These improvements all produce real benefits for our staff, customers and service users and we look forward to working with Stonewall to help us identify any areas that we can further improve on.

As a quality national resource for NHSScotland, we are committed to creating an inclusive work environment that welcomes individuals of all backgrounds, and actively highlights and celebrates the unique mix of people who, together, make it possible for us to provide the highest possible standard of care for every patient who comes here.

So in 2014 we will continue to invest in our increasingly diverse team, paying particular attention to development and innovation to make sure that we offer equality of opportunity to all our staff – because that way we provide the best possible experience for our staff, patients and visitors.
