Chair blog: cooking up a storm
I am delighted to have been appointed as the Interim Chair of the Golden Jubilee Foundation. Having served as a non-executive member on the Board for many years, I have been privileged to be part of our amazing progress and difference we have made to the lives of thousands of people around the country. Going forward, I am looking forward to continue playing my part in helping lead and shape our services for the benefit of patients across Scotland and beyond.
In my first blog as Interim Chair of the Golden Jubilee Foundation, it is my privilege to congratulate our Catering Team for their recent acknowledgments and accolades from some of the most prestigious catering awards in the country.
Our team serve a wide variety of tasty, healthy and nutritious meals to hundreds of patients, relatives, guests, visitors and staff every day.
The team's hard work and dedication recently saw two of our chef de parties receiving certificates of merit in the final of the Hospital Catering Association Hot Cookery Competition.
Iain Keown and Allan Campbell cooked in the final of Hotelympia last month as teams from were pitted against one another testing their skill in devising, preparing and presenting a two course meal which would be suitable for patients.
Iain and Allan have nearly 50 years of experience between them, and used their vast experience of catering from across the West of Scotland to prepare enough food for 50 people on a budget of just £2.10 per person. The final was carried out under tightly timed conditions, with two meals presented in a high-end restaurant style and another two presented as if served from a bulk-service ward trolley.
The fine dining on Iain and Allan's plates had barely cooled when it was announced that the Golden Jubilee Catering Team had won the Healthcare Award at the 2016 Cost Sector Catering Awards.
One of the most prestigious awards in the country, the ceremony took place in the Hilton Metropole in London, with some of the top names in the catering world celebrating the hard work and effort of individuals throughout the industry over the past year.
In just the last couple of weeks, we were also named Catering Service of the Year 2016 by the Hospital Caterers Association. This is amazing progress, from receiving a certificate of merit on our first attempt 12 months ago, to being named the top service in the country.
Providing the highest possible standard of patient care on a daily basis is absolutely essential to everything we do at the Golden Jubilee Foundation. A major part of this, which often goes unseen, is the extensive work our Catering Department does, alongside our Clinical Nutritionists, to ensure all of our patients are getting the required food, fluid and nutritional quality and intake seven days a week.
On behalf of the entire Board, I would like to congratulate our team for their incredible work over the last 12 months, and am delighted that they have been recognised on such a high profile stage for the service they provide to staff and patients 365 days a year for the NHS in Scotland.
